There are quite a few intelligent characters on this show, so I'm not certain why you think everybody is an idiot.

I don't see how you can judge the show as shallow. It's not attempting to be a completely realistic procedural show, like The Wire or something. So complaining about how Malvo doesn't get mugshots taken (which could have happened off-screen anyway) doesn't make sense.
