i’m old enough to remember when Republican Scott Walker not only stripped money from the Wisconsin education budget to fund billions in credits to the Chinese company Foxconn in order to land a plant, but also gave them legal carve outs.

As an engineer, its hilarious how we always bear the brunt of layoffs, and then quality falls into a hole after 3 years (or time tables, or keeping up with the market, whatever), and then they bring engineers back. No one in management looks 2 seconds into the future. They only look at next quarters profit margins.

Our entire economy is run by institutional investors drunk on short-term profits. Like, ten billion in profit? That’s pretty good, man. You can fix a lot of problems with ten billion dollars.

I promise you, you’re not missing out on anything… not a God**** thing. Ford quality control is out of control… and my firsthand experience bears that out. I scoured the earth for a Mav hybrid last January, found one, pinched myself, and owned it for 4 days before it started to try to self-immolate.

The problem probably isn’t the engineers, but rather all of the different management teams who give the engineers ridiculous, conflicting directions and requirements.

So, there’s a solution, but nobody wants that solution. The solution is, drive less. Start requiring neighborhoods to be built walkable, and on public transit routes. Start requiring new road projects to prioritize public transit. Override the NIMBYs who refuse to allow infill development in their neighborhoods…
