From what I understand, he quit comedy the first time because of people like that laughing the wrong way about his jokes. I guess he’s figured that he’d be fine with that, as long as he told jokes about people that weren’t like him.

He’s basically begging them to ask him, but only if they’ll say they don’t like Gadsby, because she’s a meanie who hurt his feewies.
Yep. Chapelle pointing to all of his A-lister supporters doesn’t hit like he thinks it does.
Yeah, but that’s the fun thing about the English language — there are often many words you could choose to describe a concept, so the word you actually choose can add a layer of meaning in and of itself. Since you helpfully suggested looking up the use of the word, here it is:
Which of Chappelle’s anti-trans jokes do you think are provoking deeper thought? Was it where he misgendered his trans “friend” because she jumped off a building, which is supposedly something only a man would do? Was it when he said he gets worried when he sees a lot of Adam’s apples in the audience? I watched the…
FWIW this all has only made me want to rewatch Hannah's work!
Carlin’s a great example of a comedian who stayed relevant and kept punching up, not down, as they got older, richer, more established, and more successful. There’s a reason he’s so fondly remembered still.
On that note, Carlin did the asshole routine so much better.
Comedy has a long history of provoking deeper thought by sometimes saying outlandish things.
Would be nice if everyone had this option to just pretend it doesn’t matter.
Man, talking about Gadsby has always brought out the trolls. Combine Gadsby with Chappelle and it’s a veritable avalanche of not-particularly-clever trolling. My dismiss finger is getting tired.
“It may be time to realize that Dave is just fucking with everyone re this controversy, and not take all these comments seriously.”
I think you hit on something insanely important: Adapt or die. Comedians like Chappelle and Seinfeld seem stuck in a bygone era of comedy to me. When I think about the comedy that has stood out to me in the past ten years or so, it is often the more layered and meaty stuff that stands out (and is in direct opposition…
How about a few word from someone that does push the envelop and really is That Fuuny.
I just saw Gadsby a few weeks ago doing her new show Body of Work, and it was funny as fuck. She’s an insanely talented comedian. The fact that an autistic woman can hold a theatre full of people in the palm of her hand, so emotionally engaged with her that she can make you laugh or cry, is pretty much testament to…
Dude’s been getting pushback as long as he’s been in comedy, but it seems like he’s really stuck on the trans thing. I honestly don’t think he’s playing some sort of 12-dimensional chess game here, he’s just hung up on trans folks and angry about it.
What deeper thoughts is he provoking by comparing trans women’s genitals to fake meat?
Or, more likely, Chappelle is just an asshole.
I continue to be amazed at the inability of men in general, and male comedians in particular, to fathom that maybe, just maybe, they might not be the intended audience for a performance. Their whole lives, every piece of media they’ve consumed has been targeted at them by media producers catering to their desires, so…
Which is also the sort of thing that right-wingers are doing these days. Can’t wait for his new OAN show, “CANCELED!”
It’ll run for a decade before he gets tired of it.
