That’s great! I just wanted to make sure you weren’t blaming the women striking for their and other women’s rights for the disruption in school and other programs. Sorry if I made an incorrect assumption about what you were saying.

Nothing I said contradicts what you said. I guess I could have used a + instead of a /. I don’t see a lot of women on the right organizing strikes.

Wow, this is excellent; I am definitely using it in the future. It’s so frustrating how short our memories are. So many white people think racism in America was slavery and Jim Crow and after that it was all good so what’s wrong with all these poor black folk?? Even the poorest white people got a leg up that black

Woo! Go Chapel Hill-Carrboro! The whole point of a strike is disruption, and to show that the work women do is important. Don’t like it? Then work on reforming the systems that make striking necessary, and getting women equal pay, maternity leave, access to quality healthcare, etc.

Ooh I like that, the Yellow Wallpaper made me feel absolutely ill when I read it in college.

Ok, so what are you going to do to ensure women don’t need to strike in order to have jobs that pay equally, maternity leave, access to quality healthcare, etc? The point of a strike is disruption. Don’t like it? Work on reforming the system that made it necessary.

I see what you’re saying and it’s definitely a good idea to make plans to help out mothers who may be affected (maybe with free childcare set up somewhere), but the whole point of a strike is disruption.

I think it’s a little bit less “the left sucks at organizing” and more that the right/wealthy/white don’t need to overcome the major barriers like economic vulnerability, negotiating childcare, etc in order to organize (or at least it’s much easier for them, coming from a position of power). But I definitely agree

If you don’t want to take the day off, then don’t. But don’t pretend it’s somehow in solidarity with janitorial staff because that is some high-horse bullshit. Striking is not about privilege; those who are most vulnerable are the ones we should be striking for.

The entire point of a strike is to show how important women’s work (outside or inside the home) is. Thus, shutting down essential processes and making a commotion is a way to open the government’s eyes to the value of women, and push for things like equal pay, maternity leave, etc. How does a strike suggest that women

Ugh, Wendy Williams is the WORST.

I agree with a lot of the article, but many of your assertions are ridiculous. More people in this country identify as Democrats than any other party, and a huge majority of poor and minority people do. The “liberal” celebrities may get a lot of attention (that probably does detract from the party’s seriousness) but

How on earth does the paragraph you quoted have anything to do with the screed you wrote under it?? The author is literally saying that the party should be more populist and reach out to the common people, not rely on flashy celebrities. You seem to have completely misread it or have some weird ax to grind. You can

I agree with you that it’s much more complicated than some people make it out to be (and I say that as someone who is completely supportive of trans rights). This isn’t really an answer to your post, but I think ultimately there is this tension between wanting to separate ourselves based on oppressed identities and

Kinja keeps taking away a star every time I try to recommend your post so I am verbally starring you. Exactly this! Race is a construct based loosely on genetic indicators and physical markers, and genetics and biology (in terms of race AND sex) are way more complicated than most people seem to think.

Love it! Just posted it on my facebook. Also the whiny comments section was a good reminder not to worry what the masses think about how I express myself, since evidently a huge portion of them are incapable of critical thinking.

You know Bill Clinton didn’t go to jail, right? He wasn’t even convicted but acquitted.

Thanks :) Cheers to you too! Also my bad for replying to a comment from last year lol, I forgot I had clicked through from the article this week about the new trial.

Exactly. So sorry that happened to you.
