I work in publishing. We have (bespoke) templates and processes in Word that make the rest of my work (typesetting in InDesign, conversion into xhtml, JATS, etc) much, much easier than if we were working outside of Word. Google docs, and even Open Office aren’t quite there yet for my needs.

I read this whole smarmy ass article expecting the writer to list out some awesome top secret alternative that no one has heard of. Word does a lot of stuff I need. I use it for the same reason I use photoshop.

Yup, I haven’t found a word processor that allows as much flexibility and formatting. The math autocorrect and equation is also a godsend when typing up my stat notes.

agreed! Word simply has more functionality than its competitors. That said I tend to draft documents in google docs now and then send off to some else to do formatting - which they do in indesign or word / depending on the file.

I don’t know anyone that used another program when writing/typing up their thesis/dissertation in college. Even the library had extremely strict guidelines when doing so. There is no greater program.

So much this. The author of this article probably hasn’t used word in over a decade and just assumes it sucks. Fact of the matter is, nothing else out there is as intuitive and simple to use while packing as many features as Word does.

yes, exactly this, and this is true for outlook and excel as well MS Office is just better at those things... i’ve tried the libre suite and it was shit, the google docs are half baked at best... i mean sure if you need to type up a hundred words and send it to a printer fine, but for any real word processing nothing

It seems really strange to me that a supposed tech site is crapping on what is by far the most powerful/feature rich option out there. It’s not just that it’s the best, but there’s nothing even close.

So. Much. This. I’m meticulous about formatting my documents and each time I’ve tried to switch over to a Google Docs workflow I’m infuriated at how poor the feature matching is. Word just blows Docs out of the water for formatting, which baffles me because it seems like Google has no care about matching them

Exactly. I still use Word because it’s the best. If you’re only doing basic word processing then, yeah, it’s overkill. Otherwise it’s worth the cost.

I’ve done way more word processing then I care to admit. I have never found a word processor that does anything nearly as well as Word. If you need to have complete control over the formatting of your document to submit your thesis (hundreds of footnotes, hundreds of pages, tables of contents and citations that change

There are rules yes, but this was totally unreasonable. Totally. The only reason he was “belligerent” (how belligerent? Was he displaying a possible danger to anybody?) was because United screwed up their staff rota and needed a passenger to take the fall for it.

Actually, if you read their own policy on this (it’s on their website) it says that they may require passengers to give up their seat PRIOR to boarding. They should never have boarded and seated them if they knew it was full and they needed the seats.

You’re serious? You’re actually being serious here? He was only beligerant because he didn’t want to give up the seat he paid for. America isn’t fucked up, it’s just problematic when people are okay with other peoples basic rights being taken away. I’ve been “randomly” selected by airport security and police and had

This type of response should encourage United and other airlines to come up with policies that can prevent this scenario from happening in the first place. If United can’t competently book flights, passengers should not be pressured to fix it

Do you even know what happened in this story? It seems you missed the whole point!! This man wasn’t belligerent, he payed for his seat on a plane that United OVERBOOKED and kicked passengers off of AFTER BOARDING so that four pilots on STANDBY (didn’t even have tickets) could board a plane that was going to LOUISVILLE

Unfortunately, the technically do have the legal right, it’s there in the tiny print of an airline ticket. It was an incredibly stupid strategy as everyone has observed. It was a valid protest by this customer that may prompt an overdue review of passenger rights with regard to the airlines ability to overbook

the market has spoken. It said “fuck United and all their bullshit”

sorry

are you serious? . What they can do is offer more $$..everyone has a price. Someone else will take that $1000+ hotel. You can’t use force on a paying customer. He had a reason....What if your mom was dying and you had to fly home to see her? and the next flight out is not til the next day? C’mon man can’t blame the

What the fuck, are you serious? The man paid for his ticket. He paid for a ticket to go on that plane.
