A lot of the unusual construction techniques and spindly look of early aircraft is due to the desire to keep the weight as low as possible and produce maximum lift at low speeds.

Wats interesting is in hard times tastes can become quite partisan. After the recession in the early 90s a lot of auto design became quite conservative and restrained while others swung the opposite way complete with bright colours.
