I suspect the numbers have shifted a bit in recent years, but at least as far back as the 1960s there has always been a segment of the American public that believed this. I can recall reading John Birch Society literature during the early 1980s that openly asked why leftist media figures were not arrested for treason. 

In these days of knee jerk political correctness, it’s refreshing to see the GOP unafraid to stand up and say they support good old fashioned rule by an all powerful dictator.
