I think the embarrassment is to be somewhat expected- this is something that does come with a social stigma, though it is getting less so, and it is something you have denied for many years. To have to admit that you were in denial, and then to get the meds? That is a very difficult thing.

Can you go back to the shrink who already diagnosed you? Maybe tell him that you are ready to accept his diagnosis and try treatment? Or ask a few friends if they can recommend anyone.
