This does not sound like the camera was easily hacked. It sound more like the family used the same password and login info across a lot of platforms and by process of elimination the individual was able to gain access to their Nest account do to this human error.

Working with merchants for vulnerability scanning of their network, I see this all the time. I am able to use the default login 75% of the time to login and tell them what their employee is wearing that day, what color the walls are, etc.

But unfortunately all those settings don’t actually keep the spam events from being added to your calendar. With the settings, you aren’t shown the events, but if you share your calendar with someone, they still see them. Then, to delete the spam events, you have to turn the setting back off so you can see the event

Now if only google would do the correct thing and make it so items in the spam folder can’t create calendar events.

I’ve found another way.
