This is not coming as a surprise to me. Apple wants that you use everything with there device’s that have apple logo on them. Why should the repair be any different. One of the many reason’s I don’t buy Apple products is that they are restricted and not allowed to use on other devices and so on.

You sir, are an asshole for saying 3rd party repair people are “dodgy”!! (some definitely are)

Considering a lot of the reporting error 53 happened after getting service at an authorized Apple repair place there is no excuse, Apple needs to pay up here. Not everybody lives next to an Apple store and sending in your phone is not always possible due to time constraints. Say you need it for work and you have work

Seems like 1984 came 32 years late.

Aaaand I think people would be SLIGHTLY less pissed about this if they had been warned in advance about it, or if only the touch ID sensor was disabled but you could still use your phone using your passcode.

Have you actually gotten a phone repaired at a third party repair center? They’re hardly dodgy. In addition to replacing two screens myself, every repair shop I’ve used has been clean, professional, can replace a screen in 20 minutes, and are much cheaper than the apple store.

Bias much? A little harsh on consumers.
