While I don’t disagree with anything in this piece I think it is worth mentioning that you can find as systemic treatment of the subject in Stoicism. The Dichotomy of Dependency/Control is particularly appropriate.

The biggest issue is not what your friend posted but the fact that internet culture is so toxic and intolerant that you felt a need to try to protect your friend from the internet fiends that need to stop being bullies and learn that their opinion is not that important.

Or you could go with the Stoic approach and realize that you cannot control what someone says but you can control how you respond to it. You can choose to follow the most virtuous path forwards possible. 

Tell them that this is the inevitable result of identity politics.
