The flight path was changed before they made their last radio transmission, which was "all right, good night." Seems like if there was a smoke event before the turn, while they still had radio contact, last words would have been something like "holy shit, there's a big ass fire on this plane, we're turning around."
I think the "Monster Attack" in Wilmington, NC from "Maximum Overdrive" was more of an "Alien Attack," as the machines came alive from a mysterious alien comet trail.
