What the Fed did was to fold down GM's bloated operations (Pontiac, Saturn, etc) in a slow, measured manner rather than letting them implode. It's the difference between holding an estate

@Evan Reif: The problem is Ford doesn't even allow anyone else to tinker with its platforms. The SVT team was allowed to die because the base vehicles it attempted to improve were preactically locked down to prevent aftermarket tinkering, even from the in-house shop.

Platform sharing seems fine to me, within reason.
