From my understanding, (and I work on DKIST, a solar telescope on Maui) there were three smaller telescopes that would be removed to make room for the TMT, and the TMT enclosure would be designed to be hidden from view from the various traditional shrines on the mountain.
The problem with the GMT observatory is that it’s in the southern hemisphere, so there’s a large amount of the northern sky it simply can’t see. TMT could, however, see that sky.
