For me a sports car is a car that was designed from the ground up to be a sports car. So the Z3 is one, but the M3 is a souped-up executive car. The Nissan 350Z is a sports car, but the VW Golf GTI is a hot hatchback. The 911 is one, but the Panamera is a sporty saloon.
