People do judge Americans that way, absolutely they do! Not everyone but it happens quite a bit, more than you might notice if you yourself are American, because they don't want to tell you.

Come on now, you can't think of any reason at all why anyone would feel embarrassed about, or have reason to lie about, being from the USA while travelling? Perhaps you have not travelled a lot, or perhaps you have blinders on. There is a lot of anit-USA sentiment globally.

Not all, but I have busted more than a few folks from the USA backpacking with the Canadian flag on their pack.

I am pretty sure that is called abuse. Children are naturally curious and questioning. Or I think they are, anyway. Harsh rules just mean they get better at sneaking around.

I don't really have a cause here, it was an observation that grated me and my fellow RL viewers the wrong way in an otherwise excellent show. Who knows, maybe it is because our culture is strongly matriarchal that it stuck out like a sore thumb for us as being particularly pathetic.
