I’ve never understood the “1/3 of the controller is wasted!” complaint. It’s not like the extra grip threw your balance off, or drove the price of the controller up significantly - I'd guess wireless and built-in rumble have been much bigger factors for the latter.

It was absolutely a step on the road to the dual stick standard of today, with the c-buttons in place of a second analogue (to the point of becoming the c-stick for GameCube). For N64 FPSs I always used the Turok default of thumbstick for look, and c-buttons as WASD.

Multiplayer Goldeneye and Star Fox 64 were the games that had me dreaming about a home console that could somehow split off into individual screens for each player. They got there eventually, kinda!

L4D doesn’t get enough credit for prototyping a context-sensitive, in-game callout system, perfected as the “pings” in Apex Legends.

Totally agree about the “Zelda Timeline". The OoT references in Wind Waker were great, but laying everything out like that is such an imagination-killer.

I wonder if 3. is deliberate - on PS4 (Pro) I changed costume in the opening and it caused some cutscene bugs, like no sound from the guitar.

I was a little disappointed when I realised it didn’t have the 1:1 blade collision detection of those games, but the duels with other lightsaber users look and feel pretty fantastic. I've had a great time with the post-game boss rush mode and blaring Duel of the Fates.

They did make OG Xbox games compatible with Xbox One, though - the Halos are notable omissions.

I’m glad they’re fixing it (next up, Halo 2?) but yeah, it’s really weird. And especially infuriating given that Halo and Halo 2 don’t work on BC from Xbox One onwards.
