Interactive media does not have to be fun. It can tell a story, a powerful story, without it being fun. Evidently it’s helped and grounded people who have had loved ones go through cancer. So what’s the issue.
Coworker of the cosplayer; I saw the whole thing go down. So perhaps I can clarify a few things I’ve seen brought up in other comments:

I feel like this argument should convince anyone. “We had fun” validates an event like this.
