Though one of my favorite stories: My brother-in-law (wife’s sister’s husband) is black. We went to lunch all together on vacation and the waiter called him “brother” very casually. He put on the fake-offended-guy front. “What, are you calling me brother because I’m BLACK?!”

Team NA is fun, but the whole idea of “Team Europe” manages to be clueless, offensive, and poor branding all at the same time.

Really great article, Kara. I get what they’re trying to say but to me when someone writes or says “transcended race” it just feels like they’re saying “we really liked them even though they were black” or “good thing they escaped that whole being black thing otherwise we wouldn’t have paid them any attention at all.”
