Agree to disagree, I guess, other than to say that, of course, not every trope is a crutch, but some are. Deus ex machina and fridging are two that come to mind.

but also never Kelsey Grammar.

Unexplained grief: Mutt died on the way back to his home planet.

I sure wish we could delete comments.

Thanks to re-runs, syndication, and an apparent fondness for watching family programming in college, I know him from all three!

Naming tropes isn’t criticism, but calling out weak writing that’s over-reliant on tropes can be.

Simins’ new band with partner Jilly Weiss is excellent.

“Art” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. As a devout, sincere MCU apologist, this show is a product, made to sell Disney+ subscriptions and tickets to The Marvels.

Rocky Horror at the Franklin Cinema was a formative experience for me in the 90s. But jesus, people yell stuff out at the stage show? Stop doing that.

TCM is my happy place, but I have no financially feasible way to get it. It’s literally the only TV channel I would watch live, but there’s no way for me to get it without paying $70/month for cable or Youtube TV.

That’s what TNT and TBS are for, though.

Joysticks stands out from that pack IMO. It’s a sex comedy, yes, and most women featured in the film exist solely as sex objects. But they are also equal partners in the sex that’s portrayed, and there’s far less of the questionable consent that makes films like Nerds so hard to enjoy today. Plus, come on, Jon Gries

The article closes with an anecdote about the director wanting to kiss his ears.
