They went beyond “support” for TPUSA. They sponsored the event. They didn’t just support their right to exist (which of course I do, too) but they paid money to amplify their voice. That’s an indication that their reasoning might have an ideological bent.
And this argument almost always has a…
If you’re talking about actions by universities, then yes, that’s a different story. But all you’ve mentioned is examples of students protesting speakers and positions that they find ideologically abhorrent, which is, and I can’t emphasize this enough, protected speech.
“This org who sponsors Turning Point USA events agrees with me. Case closed!”
Man, sorry, no, if there is a marketplace of ideas, then some ideas have more value than other. White nationalist fascism is a dangerous ideology, and there is no public good or educational value to be found in hearing ANOTHER person say racist bullshit. The 20th century generated plenty of thought that can be (and…
I’d encourage you to read that first sentence again and note that it says “Restrictions on speech by public colleges and universities.” That’s not what we’re talking about.

Counterpoint: Protesting speakers on campus is an essential part of the college experience. No one is under any obligation to be civil to white nationalists.
Some ideas simply don’t merit a public hearing. A university astronomy department is under no obligation to platform flat-earthers or moon-landing conspiracy theorists.
He’s also known to TV nerds for his eye-catching role as conflicted criminal Ignacio “Nacho” Varga in Better Call Saul.
Same as it ever was: “Woke corporations” don’t exist. They are bowing to public sentiment in order to keep maximizing profits on their existing IP. That it happens to be the correct thing to do is incidental. The bottom line is The Bottom Line, always and forever.
More of a “Your honor, and ladies and gentleman of the jury, did you see what she was wearing?” kind of defense.
I wonder sometimes if there’s just one Extremely Divorced Guy on here with lots of accounts, or if AV Club is just the new hot hangout for bitter divorcees.
Weird that you’d throw “lonely” in there, since there’s no mention of that in the article.
