Maybe, if you can isolate the heating element and drive it correctly. But probably not since the bread machine heats to yeast temp (only 100 degrees F) or baking temp (350). And if it did, it would be a mediocre sous vide because for sous vide, you want a pretty sizeable bowl.

Buy a rice cooker at Goodwill for $5.

I often use it to mark things. For instance, a piece on one ear bud cable makes it easy to find the one that's for the right ear.

Mixed feelings about this. I <3 Waze, Google resources can polish up some edges and improve the sometimes whacky data.

But Google, don't f**k it up! I know where you live!

When someone is having a crisis at work, it's a great opportunity. Many people get freaked out or pull away or pretend it's not happening. If you can keep calm and be kind, you can not only make a great difference, but you can establish a huge amount of trust and a longstanding relationship. That person will never

Yes, what dwon said. With newer synthetic corks and screw tops, it changes things but anything with a real cork must be kept on side and wet.

You had me at Katz's. Best. Pastrami. ANYwhere.

And wine with corks should be stored on its sides anyway.

Some chefs use only the chef's knife, for everything, even fine work and paring!

Yes, Victorinox is the one you're thinking of, recommended by Cook's Illustrated and others. They are a stunning bargain.

Disagree on diamond sharpening stick. Either learn to use a stone, get a Chef's Choice sharpener, or use the (also CI-recommended) Accusharp (under $20).

And use a steel, often.

Nicely reported Alan. Thanks for the no-hysterics zone.

There is lots of hysterical finger-pointing elsewhere, to which I'd suggest as Pogo said, "We have met the enemy and he is us." Immediately after the Boston bombing, the voices began, questioning how the authorities could have missed that, what more could be done.

Unless it was added later, the article starts with "OS X:".

True. Look up tinnitus. Very unpleasant and lasts a lifetime.

Interesting theory but I am very skeptical. I've been using my fingers for many years — and many chefs do — and never observed this problem. You're right that a tiny amount of oil will vex a meringue but I've seen no evidence that oil from skin while separating eggs will do it.

A longstanding problem with the Hive Five is that it's mislabeled. These aren't the five best, they are the five most popular. I wish LH would change the labeling to something like: "Hive Five: What Our Readers Recommend"

I agree, try flossers. There are several styles — buy a pack of each and try them all to find the ones you like best.

This is insane! In a totally good way. Love how the clips are attached to the glove so the work is locked to your hand motion, Very clever and looks like a Tim Burton movie prop. Geek cred.

Even better: Look at those who failed, then went on to succeed.

Recent Mr. Coffee models do a good job of delivering water at the right temperature, not a minor feat for an inexpensive appliance. When I use mine (instead of Aeropress, my preferred method), I up the ante by swinging the water spray nozzle away from the coffee basket and leaving the lid open for about five minutes,

> supports 30 second forward/rewind. You can even change the 30 seconds to another time that works better for you. Not sure if Downcast does this...

"What do you do other than (whatever the context is where you're meeting)"? For instance, if it's a work function, ask what they do for fun.
