This is not quite the way to shift a dog-box... done like this, you’ll round the dogs in no time.

This is why the term ‘race car’ is nebulous without a rule book to reference. If you’re talking about rally cars, the gearbox is very often open to strengthening and a dog-box will often fit into this ruling as long as shift pattern is not changed from H-pattern to sequential.

Race car is subjective - FIA Gp.N is relatively similar to production cars, R4 (R.I.P.) had a little more you could modify, Gp.A/WRC obviously more yet.

Actually in terms of rally - showroom stock (i.e. FIA GpN) allows the gearbox to be more or less open as long as OEM (or legacy model) ratios and shift-pattern are maintained. This is why drop in gear-sets that match OEM ratios exist for things like the Subaru 5MT/6MT and a variety of Mitsubishi gearboxes.

Straight-cut gears allow for the teeth to be physically larger (this is the biggest reason they’re used on race cars) and helical gears impart a side-load (albeit small) due to the angled cut.

No, they don’t. Reverse is the only straight-cut gear in an OEM Subaru transmission. I’m not here to argue either, but I’ve pulled apart enough gearboxes to know this is wrong.

I love what it was - unfortunately this guy destroyed one of the few Prodrive cars from Subaru’s most successful era of rally. I’m not saying he should put it in a museum... but cutting out the FIA cage and hacking up the dash to get the street car cluster and HVAC to fit is so damn stupid.

A magnet to the roof is really all you need... those factory carbon panels are like $3500+ and the labor to install them is no joke.
