I just use twitter notifier for chrome & facebook notifications for chrome. They both can run in the background even while chrome is closed.

yeah I have a hard time keeping up with mine as well, but I really do prefer it too facebook. I love that it doesn't flood me with stupid apps. Seems like my entire family on facebook is in love with spammy apps.
