Wow, this might be one of the weakest Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress claims I’ve ever seen, so the lawyer might have just thrown it in there to get more leverage to try to settle. That being said, any semi-competent defense lawyer knows that claim is going to be dismissed, and the case will actually be

Sounds like they did a bit of gentrifying themselves, but of course they aren’t like those other white people who move into Black and Hispanic neighborhoods. *wink wink nudge nudge*

This line so fucking tired. Portlandia makes fun of uppity people, people who take themselves too seriously, and people who are too dumb to advance the ideas they want to advance.

It’s pretty immature and incredibly short sighted for people who claim they’ve lost money because of this show. Put up a sign, tell someone you’ll only talk about it if they give you something in return, tell them to go fuck off and “blahblahblah rape apologists!!!!” when they tell you they can’t give you that. That

You mean the giant BLM sign that’s on the outside of the store in multiple scenes in the last season?

They didn’t have better things to do when they refused to speak to the publication if they didn’t get a link to their fundraising site and then further lashed out when the writer said “thanks but no thanks”. They had the opportunity to actually tell the world what they think is wrong with Portlandia but they acted

And a feminist bookstore in a historically black neighborhood is literally a textbook example of gentrification. Writing BLM on the window doesn’t change that.

I mean they also got six years of free advertising, basically, in addition to whatever money they received from the show.

Also, if they didn’t like the way they were being portrayed by the show I guess they were probably free to terminate their agreement in the past in a less demonstrative fashion.

The “punching up / punching down” idea is so overplayed. Who is or is not oppressed should not be the only standard by which we judge something is worthy of justice. Especially since power is a fluid and dynamic thing that changes by circumstance.

“not the independent bookstore that said they lost money agreeing to being used as a set”

I agree. But I also think good discourse does the same thing. This was a great opportunity to reveal some of the problems they’re having, but instead, they just lashed out like an angry teenager.

I think maybe the issue that gentrifiers shouldn’t be able to gentrify while they’re complaining about gentrification. Or, to put it another way, let’s not say that white feminists shouldn’t move into the heart of a historically black neighborhood, but don’t try and co-opt the struggles of its black residents.

Well if you’d come here 15-20 years ago and were in the neighborhood where this bookstore is located you would have seen quite a few more. Alas, they have mostly been priced out to the suburbs now.

“Oregon was formed to be a “white utopia””

“Historically black neighborhood” aka black people lived here once, before we pushed them out.

I’m not even sure what “up” and “down” are in this scenario.

Lol, yea after taking six years of the shows money I guess they finally got around to standing on their ethics, sorry you look like idiots.

Apparently the sketch hits a little too close to home. Anyway, this statement is clearly a fake: it was sent out by Rush Limbaugh and the GOP in a lame attempt to make them look humorless. Right? Right.

“Fuck Portlandia! Transmisogyny – Racism – Gentrification – Queer Antagonism – Devaluation of Feminist Discourse.”
