The criticism of the first episode is perfectly valid, but it is, if my 15-year old memory can be trusted, very similar to the book, which took a fair while to really grab you.

I disagree - it is precisely this kind of art that showed me that a life of crime wasn’t for me - the highs are never worth the lows. Also Jim Spanfeller can eat a dick.
