In 1951 my dad, who was a professional pilot his entire adult life, bought a new Buick. He drove it straight to the local airport where an aviation mechanic installed four Cessna seatbelts. The car was never started until there was a click from each occupant. This was done with every car he bought until Detroit

I can confirm from personal experience that those Buicks didn’t do so well with no brakes. Mine failed at night in the middle of nowhere later the same day this picture was taken. Luckily I was only five miles from home, so I took it slow.

I once researched the recall history of my 1986 Buick Electra, which I inherited from my parents. I was shocked by the number of issues. One, while not mechanical, was especially disturbing.

This is gorgeous. Why can’t modern cars look this good?
