You can’t get texts anyways. The signals don’t reach the plane. You can text message via WiFi. I just did it with Air Canada last week. I had access to texting and WhatsApp (not voice calls or video calls) for all my flights across the country and back.

100% this. The battery drains much faster over a couple hour flight than it would either on the ground (and connected), or in airplane mode with only WiFi enabled for the same amount of time.

The reason to turn on Airplane Mode is because your phone will continuously search for a signal while in the air and drain your battery.
