i don’t think it was classic racism as much as classic ‘hollywood narratives’. JLC is an ‘old actress’ so she’s ‘due’, even though her career isn’t exactly full of performances that were overlooked by the academy. but they decided that was the narrative and that’s that.

I think it was a perfect storm for it this year. It was an extremely stylish and youthful-feeling A24 movie starring a prominent actress of color with a long and unrecognized international career, about an Asian-American family. And it was a great movie.

Stephanie Hsu was my favourite part of the film.

It could be a fun oddball at $3,000. For $7,000 though I need a lot more than the novelty of Isuzu badges to reel me in.
