That is literally the first thought that popped into my mind when I read the title.

Of the three station wagons I’ve owned - 1992 Subaru Loyale 4wd/4sp man, 1999 Escort 5sp man and 2000 Taurus SE - my best was the Loyale. It was underpowered for highway driving, but it took turns like it was on rails, had a ton of low end torque for mild off-roading and tons of hauling capacity.

Except the 70s ones were less mechanically reliable than the 90s ones. Period.

This is the correct answer. Last of the full size breed and did all the things wagons should do the best. My parents had a 1992 Caprice from 1994-2002 and it was a glorious machine.

Close. The last gen GM full size wagons were the best overall wagons ever (so far at least). These 1991-1996 Caprices/Roadmasters/Custom Cruiser were the pinnacle of the category. Nearly perfect mechanically, comfortable, enough power, hauling utility (interior and towing), fuel economy, etc.
