Yes, I am totally going to be that guy.

It’s quite telling how easily some people were set off by this harmless joke.

Their highest form of insult is “twat” ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I am genuinely surprised that nobody had any decent burns for you. But then again, fans of this genre of reality TV are probably most likely to use the “I know you are but what am I” retort.

It’s still real to me dammit!

Did I hurt the pretend sport liking boy’s feels?

Why do they call them matches instead of scripted gymnastics exhibitions?

“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots...” fans.

I think it’s fair to object that “justice for those who have been unjustly treated, discriminated against or otherwise treated unfairly” is an attempt to abstract the issue into meaninglessness. The original protest was explicitly about police brutality, and the NFL clearly doesn’t want the focus to stay there.

This isn’t “getting people talking.” People were already talking. Diluting the message so far that it’s not even there anymore is not step one.

But people aren’t talking about “it”. By “it”, I mean the real reason that Kaepernick was protesting.

Depends on how you define “it.” If “it” is unity for the sake of unity then sure. If “it” is police and the American judicial system abusing their collective power to abuse, enslave and murder people of color, I think it’s safe to say, at least with this statement, it is getting no one talking.

Geez. I see plenty of “fruit only diets cure EVERYTHING!” that drive me insane. Someone posted that blueberries cured cancer. Really people???

There’s no such thing as “alternative medicine.” If it works, it’s just called “medicine.”

To expand on this, I’d say ultimately “divisive” has become one of those fun, dog-whistle codewords that means “Minorities/women bringing attention to something that makes straight white men uncomfortable” (or, more generally, anything that makes the privileged/ruling class uncomfortable). You’re right: “divisive”

I’m having this conversation with a friend right now. I’ll quote him directly:

“Divisive” and all variations is my new favorite word that makes me want to vomit out of my eye sockets.

Oof, good take. I have no issue with “unity” [disclaimer: I absolutely abhor the NFL] as long as it’s unity about something specific. At first it seemed like it was unity with those players who take up Kaep’s mantle, i.e. “We, as a team, stand by those who want to make this statement.” But you’re right: it’s certainly

When you can’t overcome, co-opt.
