How is that different from using a tiny 2" adapter/dongle?  Just leave the adapter/dongle attached to your headphones.  If you have multiple headphones, then just spend the <$10 on multiple adapters/dongles.  And don’t all new phones (except the iPhone) use USB-C now?

But @RumpleDickSkin’s comment doesn’t make sense, even in a sarcastic manner; the engineer wasn’t fired or ever under threat of being fired, he was not trying to circumvent security, and there was no “snooping”, so as a joke, nothing @RumpleDickSkin said is even a related possibility.
