This episode and the next episode(and episode 6) are crucial on a thematic level for the whole season. The plot of the final epsiodes would feel cheap if episodes like this didn't work hard to lay the foundation.

It's like BoJack, in that it takes a little time to find its feet. As Lady Dynamite approaches mid-series, it reveals itself as something really clever and intricate and vulnerable. I guess they're both really intended for binge-watching.

What's funny is that when the show launched, they sent the first six episodes to reviewers, and all of them (including AVC) gave it a solid "meh". I had exactly two friends who watched the first season all the way through, making it the most cult-y cult thing I've ever experienced.
