Test test, is my comment in the greys?
I miss forums. I wish more games had forums.
And sure, you could go to Discord and ask, but then you’d have to wait for a response, hope that whoever’s on discord right now actually knows the answer to your potentially very obscure question, and isn’t really annoyed at having to answer this question all the time if it’s not so obscure.
God I hate discord, basically impossible to thread, keep a single conversation going or search for anything. If you want to talk shit live or do voice chat, fine, but that’s about it. Slack is somewhat better, but the death of forums to be replaced with reddit or discord has been an awful move.
To be fair, if the game is under 5 years old you’re more likely now to get some half assed SEO optimized blog with regurgitated drivel when googling now.
I have no idea how to use Discord. It scares me. I miss forums.
Along the same line, for all the sites out there that need to hear it: Social media is not a suitable replacement for comment sections.
Back in the internet ancient history, one of the good things about mailing lists is that you had a copy of every email in your inbox. But when forums became popular the good thing about them is how easy was to follow a conversation.
Yes, this. From the moderators, regulars, and experts viewpoint, on forums or Reddit. They can answer questions once, and if someone asks the same question again, that’s on them for not Googling first. On Discord, I often find a lot of hostility between mods and new users because they get tired of responding to the…
And once they delete their forums, people searching on Google won’t be able to find all the old “Gearbox/Borderlands sucks” threads!
It doesnt because it isnt indexed on the web. I have to join the discord. Then I have to search for a phrase or group of words. Then I have to try and track the conversation in room full of people talking about separate things where the discussion may or may not be replies to comments but just comments. So I have to…
At least reddit works on a thread basis, and while still nowhere near forum level where you have categories, sub categories and then a place to post your thread, at least reddit allows for people to google search shit and find help online.
It really doesn’t. Sure, say you search up “lag fix” on Discord. Well, now you’ll have to spend upwards of 20 minutes combing through every time somebody mentioned those two words in a conversation ever. As well, those Discord answers don’t show in search engines, meaning you won’t be able to enjoy simply typing in…
Forums have a longer life span than a discord channel buuuut they’re only as good as the links provided.
Reddit makes a lot more sense than discord. I’m not a huge reddit fan for video games because the upvote system just creates an echo chamber, but it’s better than a fancy live chat client.
This was the last place I posted frequently outside topical stuff like here, and it’s even worse than it sounds. We’ve had indirect warnings about this since last year, and it appears it may be a result of a single CM’s dislike of bothering with forums. Further, back when it first came up I did a one to one comparison…
The biggest argument for forums is that if I go to Google or DDG and type in:
While not a perfect fit, I feel the better move would be to go to Reddit. But I guess they went with Discord because it’s the more ‘gamer-y’ platform, despite how people actually use it.
