right… so our "maturing" government today would be incapable of lying to us to get involved in illegal wars, tracking us, killing american citizens without due process. or even sponsoring things like drug deals, running guns, spying on our friends and allies, etc, etc…

If we were talking about culture then yes. We would be having a completely different conversation. What we are talking about is government organizations with nearly unlimited budgets, who are pushed forward and prodded by private corporations.
