This reminds me of what a few of my Midwest refugee friends and I have realized over the years. A great swatch of this country, mostly concentrated in the South and Midwest, value politeness much more than honesty. It matters far less what you’re saying than how you’re saying it.

Instead of focusing on more ways to funnel money into the federal government (where both sides can point out a ton of waste, though they may not agree which departments), why not directly tackle the issue? Tie the median level to the top earner in any given organization...i.e. the median worker’s annualized income…

Capital gains should be taxed at least as highly as labor income.

This is a little incomplete because you don’t mention raising capital gains taxes, specifically, which is what comprises a huge portion of the wealthy’s income. It makes no sense to tax a salaried worker at a higher rate than someone who collects income from a stock portfolio.

Marginal dollars. Poor people can’t afford 12% of their income disappearing. Wealthy people wouldn’t even notice.

Not to mention that the Chicago Police were saying “Well this is just a case of kids being dumb to maybe we should chill out a little bit before we rush to judgement” and white people flipped the fuck out.
