This is exactly the enthusiasm that I am here for. Effing awesome.
First thing that came to mind:
You’re not wrong. This generation and the 2011+ are quite reliable, and the 2004 to 2010 were really unreliable.
You only do that to a $5000 car when you’re hiding the massive oil leaks.

So the takeaway is Tesla’s autopilot is about as good as a bunch of the worst drivers out there. Really scraping the barrel for excuses.
The cynic in me thinks it was only “scrubbed” to generate more buzz, but it was a silly fun video so eh, however it got out, it’s fun.
924's and 944 Turbo’s will always have a special place in my heart. My dad always wanted one, and he and I probably test drove about half dozen 944 turbos at one point. He never pulled the trigger though (late 80's and he ended up with a Mitsubishi eclipse turbo). I think the 944 Turbo is one of the nicer looking cars…
Clearly. And to be further clear: conceptually I get that they are great cars* ...so my post was only partly tongue in cheek. I’m just not a fan...even if my response isn’t logical.
I’m a crybaby who’s been whining about the same fuckin’ thing for 25+ years now, but everything’s too big - and for the last ~15 years, they’re also way too powerful.
(prepping my blind fold and last smoke):
As someone who races a Lotus car from the Chapman era, I can confirm all the legends. The cars are both brilliantly engineered and underbuilt. I sheared a rear hub at Road Atlanta. Then I learned the same problem occurred to Sterling Moss many years before. The cars were built to go 24 hours and 1 minute and mine was…
The cherry on top of the “Well, I guess I’m fucked here...” is that he looses a shoe. That’s for sure the moment when you officially give up.
Last month, I recorded my drive DOWN the mountain and the video clocks at about 28 minutes. In a 2014 Grand Caravan, first gear mostly held me at speed but the brakes were judiciously applied because of the two vehicles ahead of me.
Thanks, great reply and if I wasn’t going into exams I’d like to give you a longer response.
There are some bigger picture discussions of sustainability which consider end of life, raw materials and power to manufacture and even broader ethical considerations such as wealth distribution and where manufacturers profit…
I love the oilhead BMWs almost as much as I love the airheads: you got a hell of a bike! He obviously took great care of it, and I’m sure you’ll have a blast.
I have heat and I am one of the few who drive an BMW 850 everyday. 4K miles on it this year. I would have had more but I was out of work for a couple months. Going to drive it to Radwood in Chicago at the end of the month.
annoyingEngineerdid did notice that it has wrong color for an S52 in its valve cover. The valve covers are likely interchangeable but it does seem to have an inlet manifold that wasn’t used with S52s (the original engine did have such though). So maybe the whole engine is a “parts bag special”?
“Based on a peak under the hood, that’s still an S50 mill, and it should put out the same 240 horsepower.”
