The Bachelorette, Death edition?

hey, this is great. thanks for hanging around until we got clarity. my bad for my contribution to the misunderstanding and for my being ambiently shitty about the whole thing. i too remain fragile from my experience, which was having folks raining on my star trek parade and telling me it wasn’t even really star trek.

Forsaking Death: Love Island

With his appearance, did he lock up the 25-35 self-important raging white male hopped on creatine and apple cider vinegar demographic?

I quite liked Burnham from the beginning (keeping in mind of course that every flaw is also an opportunity to have her grow later on) but I agree that the writing was struggling with the idea of her as the main character. As you put it it’s not a natural fit for a Star Trek show. I’m kinda saddened that I barely know

I just watched an episode of Disco where there were a few alien characters, so it’s unclear whether there’s another explanation for The Orville’s delay or if perhaps Disco is just using a lower safety bar.

This filmed pre-pandemic and season 4 is starting production now in Toronto (although with current numbers of positive cases they may have to delay that) whereas the Orville films in Los Angeles.

Site ate my earlier reply about how TNG thru ENT were ultimately made by all the same people, and Macfarlane worked with

I think they’re taking a lot more care this time to make the cast more rounded and take from what has been done in the past:

Love it or hate it but Discovery is pretty much on par with other Star Trek shows in that regard. They all needed a bit to get on their feet and let their characters grow. If I had to have one criticism it’s that I think it would be better as an ensemble show and not so focussed on Michael as the main character. This

The Orville? I mean.. it IS a better traditional Star Trek show.

The modern Star Treks are decent modern Spins on ST, but they are by no means the same show as ToS, TNG or even DS9 -- which is, arguably, the progenitor of the modern series (since it introduced the holographic display systems).

The implication that Section 31 is the organization that does the necessary things that Starfleet can’t do is sort of the epitome of what I’ve disliked about Disco’s first two seasons.

The thing is, there’s nothing inherently wrong with setting Disco 10 years before TOS. There are plenty of serialized stories that you could tell in that setting.

Secret of NIMH scarred me as a kid. We had cable growing up and they showed it a lot. So I got to see it when I was 10-12 right after it came out and had just moved to cable. Something about that movie just hit me and never left.

I mostly agree with your last paragraph, though I would add that I feel like the current crop of shows is just obsessed with having only the highest stakes possible, so of course we have to do a “The Federation has fallen, let’s rebuild it!” story. I’d be much happier with lower stakes about the crew confronting some

Yes, but the problem is that the current shows always cast the Trek ideals as being upheld by, well, idealists and heroes. Rather than there being some permanent uplift in humanity, people in general are always ready to backslide while there are a few heroes left who practice the Old Ways. My problem with these

Time and time again the Federation would face challenges, sometimes physical and sometimes philosophical, and in each case the show would reassert the strength and resiliency of of Trek ethos.

From the people. And that’s the point. The people aren’t better because Starfleet ships are always zooming around to bring them things or enforce norms. People are better and give each other mutual aid and cooperation because humans have entered a new era where that’s the default; that’s who we are. When Q puts

So you’ve thrown out a few things without really putting anything in perspective or context.

But in the context of my feeling that Trek’s current creators don’t trust in Trek’s ideals...

Everything is serious on the web, especially the jokes!
