Yes. It’s still more environmentally friendly to go electric for long trips, but if I replaced my daily driver and was able to use home charging, I’d be getting a lot of bang for the buck environmentally even if I used to gasoline powered car for long trips.

Yeah, I mean, I could say that my “distance to empty” when I fill up is always at least 100 miles off from the mileage I end up getting in my gas-powered car, but that’s more like 20% rather than 50%. And gas stations are pretty widely available.

If comfort is a major consideration then VW may be coming from behind, at least in terms of their SUVs. My wife bought a Tiguan, and I wouldn’t describe it as comfortable. Not even as comfortable as the Jetta I had before (that she took from me and traded for the Tiguan).

(And my thought in terms of “car stereos of yore” was the act of looking for the next tape or CD to put in, which frequently required taking your eyes off the road for an extended period of time... and led once to me driving my Acura Integra into a ditch between Lubbock and Amarillo).

The study they did to support the texting ban in the city I have previously lived in but no longer do showed that the biggest contributor to distracted driving crashes was other people in the car. Texting was, at the time, a contributor in such a small number of crashes that they didn’t even bother to break it out…

What about for the passenger’s phone? Is there a way to make a drivers’ phone not work while allowing the passengers to continue to use theirs? It would seem like it would be difficult.

My 2012 Passat had the analog clock in the middle of the dash. I guess they’re just trying to do a thing, but it did seem weird to have three different clocks I could look at while driving (thankfully, they were all set together, so you didn’t have to worry about them showing different times).
