Obviously there are extremes. I think I’d use the hell out of it if I were you. For my friends and parents a combination of Instagram and phone calls / txt messages does the trick. To each their own. I know my parents found Facebook frustrating and time consuming so they also are okay living without it.

I honestly couldn’t care less about what Facebook wants me to click on. I hide every “trending” article I see in the app and use FB Purity to hide the trending news section on the desktop site. I set up an adblock filter to just block the trending stories from showing up for this exact reason. I haven’t seen them in like a year.

I’ve been suckered into clicking on some of those trending stories. What’s truly horrible about them is that they show you what the Facebook population thinks. Literally, you get a feed of all the posts people have made about the story, which are usually a few lines of commentary with the actual content embedded…

Every time I read a story about the inner workings of fb, I seem to get more & more disgusted with who they are and what they do.

I use FB Purity, which means I never see anything I don’t want to see, including trending news, an out-of-order newsfeed, recommendations, sponsored posts, etc. It makes the FB experience palatable. I wish I could divorce myself completely from FB, but it’s necessary for my work.
