So the % chance of rain is meaningless if you don’t know what the POP area is (I mean what it covers, not the very concept)? Now that forecasts are or seem to be specific to an exact location or zipcode, as on our weather apps, it doesn’t seem unreasonable to assume that the % applies to where I am right now, instead

Yes, yes, the term “security theater” is 10 years old at least, in reference to airport security. But one quibble: it is meant to placate and assuage, but it also aims to protect. The play is for everyone, wolves and sheep. A more unnerving thought is that we can’t/won’t ever be truly safe (or not until the Precogs

Ehhh, “their job” is to look for large tubes of tooth paste and “act official.” The rank and file clearly haven’t been trained to deal with situations like this. Sure, their cowardice is disappointing...but not surprising. The blame should go to the (very well paid) TSA brass and their enablers in Congress.

I could give or take 3 and 4...but 5 and 6, that’s where it’s at.

UK TV runs differently....people are required to pay a TV license to watch the BBC or else go to the Tower (so no cable requirement for beeb stations). In Canada there’s no license, but CBC is broadcast over the airwaves. It’s a scandal that we can’t watch the networks for free online in the US without a cable

To the dipshit go the soils.

It is also necessary to do a little market “skimming” or “creaming.” That is, for bikes over, say, $700, sales volumes aren’t really going to be that high. Ditto for more-specialist bike gear, like competition level jerseys, shorts, shoes, etc. There simply isn’t enough volume to support what would seem like a fair

Yes, exactly. My point is that the presecurity line at the airport is not a unique opportunity for terrorists. Lines exist in the world and cannot be protected. Nor is it TSA’s job to do this. It is an absurd idea that people shouldn’t stand in lines at an airport because such lines could then be bombed. If there is a

Yeah, but there’s no explanation for why there would suddenly be a higher idiot:nonidiot ratio. What has changed is closer scrutiny after the attacks in Europe, increased passenger numbers, and fewer screeners.

In the same breath, you can’t really believe that people with water bottles is a significant contributor to these incredible delays. More the ticket: chokepoints, too few security gates, inadequate staffing.

The “soft target” argument is such utter bs, but people love to trot it out. Yes, people standing in a security line would be an easy target. So too would people at a sports stadium, in a mall, at a restaurant, at a bus depot, train station, etc etc. Airplanes in the air are a dramatic target. Anything related to them

I don’t want to defend TSA workers, but they’re not allowed to exercise any personal judgment in their roles (assuming they possess it). It’s clear, as well, that the TSA looks to hire rule-follower types...and when mining for that sort of disposition, you’re going to get a lot of simple, narrow, uneducated minds.

The problem is more related to the bottle necks that are a design feature of the TSA system. One could claim that this is secondary to the design of the airport/terminal, but this is wrong. The TSA wants their checkpoints where they want them, and largely that’s where they are. You can see this in action at Newark,

Ahhh, guess so, though it’s not entirely clear what they’re talking about.

Can’t be after-tax. When we talk about “what we make,” we’re talking about salary/income...i.e., pretax. Also, take the NYC figure. $87K take-home is, like, $125K pretax. No way. That’s, like, top 5% of earners.

?? She was running on Lee when he asked her to run on the sidewalk. He then arrested her on Rickett or Mission. What’s confusing about this? He wouldn’t have asked her to run on the sidewalk on a street that has no sidewalk.

She was running on Lee Road...it’s a bit south of there. She was arrested on Rickett/Mission...but the request was on Lee. I grew up around there. There is a sidewalk on Lee. Why she didn’t run on that side (there’s even more grass over there), who knows.

Hilarious. You try to make a point about not being illiterate while grossly misreading a fairly straightforward quotation.

If you mean with men, the Q’cois accent would of course make her quite popular. It immediately broadcasts that she is not French (young French women are often seen as being too much trouble, too much work). And since it’s French, not English, they can more easily talk to her. Win-win.

Yeah, this is total BS. The best pen widely available is the V5. Micro rollerball or gtfo.
