There is an excellent picture book The Story of Ruby Bridges with lovely illustrations for young school-age children.

I hear you. I want the people in charge of real “life and death” stuff to run rings around me intellectually, and yet it’s becoming clear that I am significantly smarter than some of them. Germany is pretty much the only country that doesn’t whitewash its history, and makes damn sure children are raised learning everything about its past mistakes so they won’t make them again. Virtually no other country does that.
