Half Dome is higher above the valley floor, but the bottom 2500 feet is just very steep hiking. The actual technical rock routes are only 1500 to a little over 2000 feet of vertical.

That's what's so hard to explain to people. I climb 5.12 ish, and when you explain that the easiest routes are 5.0 and the hardest are 5.15, 5.12 seems near the top. The leap from 12 to 14 is just unfathomable to me though.
