Weird, moms somehow know how to be good moms when they didn’t have one. And far too many moms have to know how to be dads, too, because they are raising their children alone.

I don’t know that kids should have homework before fourth grade, personally. Structure your plans to teach them one-two good things WELL by the end of that hour. It’s on them to practice it for the test on their own time. 

Second graders used to carry a lot more when they worked on the farms and in the factories. Nine year olds should be able to carry ten pounds down the hall. No wonder they are all fat!

• A waist belt and sternum strap. These help distribute the weight more evenly. If your child’s backpack doesn’t have a sternum strap, you can add one cheaply.
