Bolt action, lever action, even single shot rifles were originally designed for war (i.e. shooting people). AR-15s are just a newer design. If AR-15s are assault rifles, then so are Remington 700s, Winchester 94s, Marlin 1895s, Trapdoor Springfields, etc.
