I like this woman’s approach; if they want Big Government sticking its nose where it doesn’t belong, what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. If they’re gonna govern by Sharia, let’s be equally absurd and draconian for both sexes.

A Seattle man was recently convicted of harassment for repeatedly yelling “You fucking Ethiopian” at a parking attendant. A man in Boulder was convicted of a misdemeanor for yelling racial slurs and saying “get out of my county” to a black university student. “Hate speech” per se may be protected by the First…
The free speech issue is why I don’t have a problem with the officer being hesitant to take a report. The kids are assholes, yes, but being an asshole is not a crime.
When students are admitted and subsequently attend college, they agree to abide by a code of conduct. The code of conduct for students at the public university where I work includes harassment, hate speech and creating a hostile environment. If these students were on campus, they absolutely deserve disciplinary action.
You know that campus officers aren't just regular police, right? They aren't there strictly to make sure the law isn't being broken out of the goodness of their hearts. They are hired and paid by the university to uphold campus safety and rules. Like walking your bike in certain areas. Which is not against the law,…
erased my original comment but I am so glad I never say anything that attracts one thousand replies
From under my rock: whoa, Bey referenced the Panthers, in BHM? Cool! Black citizens bearing arms made JEdgar’s head spin like the little girl’s in the Exorcist ;).
Isn’t college sort of a last opportunity to be educated about the ways of adulthood? Disciplining the instigators—in theory—helps identify unacceptable behavior to those nasty little stormfronters & the student body at large before they go charging into the world as a fully grown public menace. Even a dreadful…
“They were upset that the officer did not do anything. I don’t think he could do anything.”
If I was outside at my work but still on the campus, I’d still expect to get fired for shit like this. If it was off-campus, things get stickier.
In a world where religious schools can deny housing/kick people out for having unmarried sex (an actual rule, though never enforced, at my catholic college), I’d say it’s definitely OK for this sort of shit.
They were students on campus. If you clock out at work, but hang out in the parking lot, you’re still subjecting yourself to discipline.
There could probably be arguments made about disturbing the peace or similar.
Depends on the workplace and their standards. For instance, my former job specifically said that things in the public forum including social media or in this case, things shouted in a park could be cause for discipline up to and including termination even if it was not directly related to work at all.
not a public area, campus. very different.
I said that I don’t think colleges should apply standards that are not applied to adults in the real world.
You’re right, they are not in high school anymore. They are adults, and they need to know even LEGAL actions can have consequences outside the legal system because there are codes of conduct in the adult world that are not necessary laws. What company or school does NOT have a code of conduct?
Part of being an adult and using your freedom of speech, means you don’t have freedom from consequence. As an adult you can express yourself freely, but employees, business owners, members of groups or societies, and so on are not impervious to consequence. Standards and ethics can be be applied and an adult can lose…
You are correct. I can’t understand why they thought a police officer would take a report when no actual law was broken.
It is a free speech issue. That’s why no one is advocating they be imprisoned. Kicked out of school for violating its ethics? Sure.
