Why not do something actually interesting...like if the slaves had revolted against the Confederacy and won the war without the North? And then the white North had become terrified of the free blacks among them and in the South and become malevolent?

I’d much more prefer an alternative world where the Union and Confederates destroyed each other, leaving the former slaves and natives to build a new nation out of its ashes.
