It did kind of undercut those scenes. But maybe he’s eating less in the apocalypse. Also, is there still any reason to wear a disguise when the world is on fire?

I didn’t find Steppenwolf boring at all this time around, the extra scenes transformed a bland alien viking into something almost pitiable. Also, his improved facial animation alone makes the character more 3-dimensional.
I noticed there was less Batman too, and it was kind of nice considering DC seems hesitant to release anything without him as its shepherd.
I enjoyed it too. Batman v Superman director’s cut also makes more sense than the theatrical version, but it’s kind of nuts just how much Snyder tries to stuff into single film. It’s at least Snyder’s original visions, not a chopped up Frankenstein’s monster. Flash and Cyborg both fare better. I actually found…
Whenever I read the title I still think someone is talking about Get Carter. It’s not like “John Carter” had a lot of name recognition where I’m like, oh yeah, the space man!
Not only were the killers based on Leopold & Loeb (who were believed to be at least casual lovers) there’s some heavy gay subtext in Rope (Hitchcock did the same thing with James Mason and Martin Landau in North by Northwest - it was unfortunately common to add queer subtext to villains)
Right?! Everyone freaking’ LOVES Saxsquatch.
AV Club is shitting on Saxsquatch?! Dude is a fucking LEGEND. Who does this Billiam Huggs guy think he is to shit on SAXSQUATCH?
To a degree. There are some interesting threads in Superman Returns. But it still retained the Donner films’ Christ allegory. The climax ends with Superman basically dying, sacrificing himself in order to be resurrected.
The first filme’s Wolverine-Rogue meeting and relationship is one of the best parts of any X-Men movie. The moments when the films remembered these are real world characters (young Angel filing down his wings, Iceman coming out to his parents, etc), rather than super heroes is when they were at their best.
So much for people joining Kal-El in the sun, I guess Jonathan Kent was right all along.
Apparently the grandmother is Marthian Manhunter.
Glad I’m not alone in my appreciation for the first X-Men movie. I never thought the 2nd one was that much of an improvement. I was ready for a train wreck in 2000, a team movie with multiple characters crammed into a 100 minute movie sounded like a recipe for disaster. But X-Men was one of the rare exceptions where…
Wasn’t it the 1990s animated series that first made the suit evil?
For sure, he didn’t get that the heroes aren’t really heroic, and aren’t too far from becoming the villain. Snyder’s Watchmen are given the full hero treatment when they’re just thrill-seeking. Meanwhile, Matthew Goode’s Ozy is portrayed as a mustache-twirling heavy from the moment he’s on screen (it made me appreciate…
For sure, the stories are there, I meant on film. We can all thank Mario Puzo for transforming a Jewish immigrant metaphor into a Christ metaphor.
Not only that, but it would have been 3 movies.
If someone would treat Superman as an actual character with a personality rather than a Jesus-metaphor with hella powers, we might get stories that don’t hinge on him being evil or being killed.
No Justice League or Shazam questions? This week of all weeks? You’re slipping, AV Club.
I was too numbed by the post-rampage-style-destruction-and-Emil Hamilton-sucked-into-a-wormhole-kiss to be bothered by the neck snap.
