This is actually part of the DisplayPort spec - turning off the monitor is supposed to act exactly like you’d unplugged it (which will, of course, screw with anything you had on it). Not all DisplayPort devices do this but they’re actually SUPPOSED to. It’s terrible design, but it is by design.
