That is definitely a southern California thing. Fastest way to tell SoCal from NorCal is the use of the word “the” in front of a freeway number.

The weirdest thing about Bay Area people is the way they drop “The” in front of freeways; The Five, The 405, The 101. It sounds so weird when they say take 5 to 405 to 118 to 23 to 101 etc.... It sounds like they’re saying take a break since The 5 is the primary freeway we both talk about.
